Chapter 48

Kaios

I clear my throat before speaking.

“We must get this meeting started,” I say loud enough for all to hear.

Tuenar sets his eyes on me. “Esius is not here yet, I think we can wait a few more minutes.” He looks to Aaos and gives him a smug smile.

Gods, this man is infuriating.

“He will not be joining us,” I say with no amount of emotion. I find it’s easy to slide back into my cold, heartless facade when the girl isn’t around and I am thankful for it.

“Well, why not? He called the meeting,” Reion says, annoyance clear on his face.

“I have some bad news.” I keep my voice steady, looking forward but not making eye contact with anyone. It is best to say what needs to be said, so I do. “Esius is dead.”

The room is silent. Eerily quiet as those words settle in to each and every God in this room.

“No,” Tuenar says under his breath. “Impossible.” His words are quiet and spoken out of disbelief. I feel it the moment he sets his eyes on me, his burning gaze hot on my skin. “What did you do?!” he growls, pushing to his feet and lunging for me. The rest of us all move at once. I get to my feet and step back, keeping distance as Aaos and Enrasil grip Tuenar around the arms, holding him back.

“I do not want to fight,” I say loudly, holding my hands in front of me.

“Of course not, you coward. What did you do to him?!”

I slowly lower my hands back to my sides.

“Let him speak!” Reion’s voice booms through the room and once again everyone is quiet, though Tuenar’s breathing is heavy enough to be heard from my position across the room.

I hold my head high, pulling in a breath and letting it out before I speak.

“I understand why you would think I had something to do with this, but you could not be more wrong,” I explain.

Tuenar growls, still being held back by the other two Gods.

“Tell us what happened,” Bathos says in a small voice. It is rare for him to speak up during these things. I look to him and nod. He is backing me up in his own way and it is appreciated.

“Morticus is to blame. I… Before I go into great detail, I must apologize to all of you.”

Tuenar’s face turns an awful shade of purple as his anger deepens. The others begin to shift around more as well, their anger spiking.

“I need to apologize for the way I have acted over these last five hundred years. It has not been proven yet, though I know it to be true, and this, of course, is no excuse for my actions but I was spelled to forget what really happened that day. The day I lost Katrina… All this time, my memories were different from the truth.” I glance from one to the other to the next. Tuenar’s emotions do not change, but at least Aaos’s face falls the slightest.
